Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
