A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
